Menopause happens naturally to women when they’re usually between 45 and 55 years old. It means they stop having their periods. Despite its natural occurrence, menopause introduces a range of symptoms that can significantly impact daily life
Many women are interested in trying different things to deal with these symptoms. A study done in Alberta found that women are starting to seek cannabis delivery services to relieve menopause symptoms.Â
What Happens During Menopause?
During menopause, women might feel different physically or mentally. These can include hot flashes, changes in the genitals, mood swings, muscle and joint pain, trouble sleeping, and reduced interest in sex.
Up to 80% of women go through one or more of these symptoms, which can affect their life quality. These symptoms can start before the final menstrual period and continue even after menopause, with hot flashes lasting about 7.4 years on average.
To manage these symptoms, women do the following:
- Make lifestyle changes,
- Take hormone therapy
- Use non-hormonal medications
- Try other therapies.
Hormone therapy is often recommended first for troublesome symptoms, especially if there are no reasons not to use it and if the woman is younger than 60 or within 10 years of her last period. However, some women are scared of hormone therapy because of health risks. After the Women’s Health Initiative study found that a certain type of hormone therapy increased the risk of heart disease and breast cancer, fewer women wanted to use it.
Women Use Cannabis As A Menopause Pain Reliever
Even though later studies showed that hormone therapy might not be as risky as first thought, some women still avoid it. Instead, they might try other things they think are safer. For example, some women are turning to cannabis to help with menopause symptoms. But there’s not much research on whether cannabis helps with these symptoms.
How Cannabis Relieves Menopause Pain Symptoms
To answer the concerns on how cannabis relieves menopause pain symptoms, the National Library of Medicine conducted a thorough study.
Participants in this study were women aged 35 and above residing in Alberta, Canada. The study collected self-reported data from participants on various aspects, including demographics, their menopausal status and symptoms, their use of cannabis, and their perceptions of cannabis.
Researchers employed descriptive statistics, comparative analysis, and logistic regression to examine the relationships between cannabis usage and participant characteristics.
Results
Out of the 1761 responses gathered, 1485 were considered for the study. Approximately 35% had already undergone menopause, while 33% were currently experiencing it.
Among the participants included in the study, 499, or around 34%, reported current cannabis use, while 978, or approximately 66%, indicated previous cannabis use.
Among the current cannabis users, more than three-quarters stated they were using it for medical purposes. The primary reasons cited for current cannabis use were to:
- improve sleep (65%)
- alleviate anxiety (45%)
- reduce muscle or joint pain (33%)
Of those currently using cannabis, 74% reported experiencing symptom relief. Women currently using cannabis were more likely to report menopause symptoms compared to non-users. Additionally, past smoking history and self-perceived health status were associated with current cannabis use.
Some women are trying cannabis to help with menopause symptoms. More research is needed to make sure cannabis is safe and works well for managing menopause symptoms.
